Additional Notes:
  • All members use the RRTMG radiation parameterization scheme.
  • Members using MYNN are using the EDMF version.
  • All runs are performed on the ESG grid.
  • Member names follow a coded naming scheme:
    • The number after "M" denotes the microphysics scheme (0 = Thompson; 1 = NSSL)
    • The number after "B" denotes the PBL scheme (0 = MYNN; 1 = Shin-Hong; 2 = TKE-EDMF)
    • The number after "L" denotes the land surface model (0 = NOAH; 1 = NOAHMP; 2 = RUC)
    • "_P" members are part of the physics-only sub-ensemble.
    • "_PI" members are part of a sub-ensemble using IC/LBC diversity via RRFS/GEFS.
    • "_PSI" members include IC/LBC diversity via RRFS/GEFS and stochastic perturbations.
  • Member M0B0L0_PG is a control member used as a basis for comparison.

During the 2022 Hazardous Weather Testbed (HWT) Spring Forecasting Experiment (SFE), CAPS is running a total of 21 SAR-FV3 forecasts in several ensembles for select days in May and June of 2022.

These runs are initialized at 00 UTC (7:00 PM CDT) each day and are run using the FV3-LAM model on a CONUS domain. These forecasts are being performed to assist the National Weather Service in determining an optimal configuration for the next-generation FV3 ensemble, the Rapid Refresh Forecasting System (RRFS). Forecast ensembles being run by CAPS include a set of members designed to evaluate different physics configurations, an IC/LBC ensemble, and an ensemble using stochastic perturbations.

Products from this year's ensemble can be found here: 2022 HWT SFE / HMT FFaIR Products
